Quang Ngai province has 3 ethnic minorities including Ca Dong, Cor and Hre living scattered in 6 mountainous districts. Each ethnic group has rich and diversified tangible and intangible cultural heritage. In recent years, Quang Ngai has made efforts to preserve and promote the cultural values of ethnic minority people in mountainous areas.

Preserving traditional cultural values

According to statistics, Quang Ngai province currently has over 300 individuals from the mountainous ethnic groups across the province who preserve and promote local intangible cultural values. The province has 3 people artisans, 16 elite artisans recognized by the State.

For many years, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has collaborated with the mountainous localities and the village elders and artisans to organize dozens of training courses to teach folk songs, folk dances, and traditional music in localities for the younger generations to learn.

Mr. Dinh Van Sieng, Son Long commune (Son Tay district), has devoted his efforts to collect hundreds of musical instruments and household appliances of Ca Dong people. Son Tay district has also created conditions for Mr. Sieng to display and promote Ca Dong cultural preserving objects for local young people to visit.

With Mr. Pham Van Say, a Hre in Ba Thanh commune (Ba To district), the folk song of Hre ethnic people is "treasure", an indispensable spiritual dish. So, in recent years, Mr. Say has contributed to preserving and teaching young people to preserve the unique culture of the Hre ethnic group.

Need to promote the value of heritage

In recent years, implementing the plan of the PPC on preserving and developing the culture of ethnic minorities in Vietnam till 2020, the mountainous districts in the province have organized compilation and teaching of ethnic minority languages for officials and teachers working in ethnic minority areas. At the same time, localities have implemented preserving and restoring traditional stilt houses and using them in community cultural activities in localities.

The provincial People's Committee has also implemented a project on preserving and promoting the cultural value of Lang Teng village, Ba Thanh commune (Ba To district), with a budget of more than VND 10 billion, helping local people conserve and maintain tradition profession, tourism and economic development. The mountainous localities have also strived to restore and develop a number of typical traditional jobs that have been faded away, such as traditional crafts, brocade weaving, rattan and bamboo making, and traditional festivals of each ethnic minority.

Said by Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism: In addition to the achievements in preserving and promoting the cultural identities of ethnic minorities, there are still some customs and superstitions, early marriage still occur; the awareness of a part of the people in preserving and protecting the traditional cultural values is not high.

“In the coming time, the cultural sector will coordinate with localities to well implement emergency conservation projects, develop ethnic minority culture and eliminate unsound customs; continue to restore craft villages, increase law dissemination and education in combination with organizing festive activities, cultural exchanges for ethnic minority people and maintaining propaganda activities, preserving typical traditional cultural values of ethnic groups” Mr. Tri added.
